A Superwhisper alternative for Windows
Superwhisper runs on Windows and has a free tier, so Windows availability is no longer a differentiator. The useful comparison is a feature-rich product with Free and Pro plans versus a deliberately small local-recognition utility sold once. This comparison is written by VocalCode, so verify the linked Superwhisper documentation before deciding.
Current plans
Superwhisper's current documentation lists Free and Pro. Pro is $8.49 monthly, $84.99 annually or $249.99 lifetime as of 7 August 2026. Its feature table lists AI-powered modes, custom vocabulary and other advanced features under Pro. VocalCode has a 30-day trial and then costs $4.99 once, plus applicable tax.
Those prices are not like-for-like. Superwhisper has a much wider feature set and both cloud and local recognition options. VocalCode recognises, punctuates and types, and can create local evidence-linked meeting notes; it has no AI rewriting modes or cloud meeting bot workflow or cloud speech-recognition path.
No unsupported performance comparison
We did not run Superwhisper under a controlled product-comparison protocol. Its app offers multiple model choices and post-processing paths, so a model-file test would not establish how the finished product performs. See Superwhisper's current model documentation for its own list.
VocalCode currently publishes measurement policy and model-selection notes, not quantitative accuracy or latency claims. Future numbers require raw outputs, exact inputs, model hashes, scoring code, hardware details and evaluation data licensed for the intended commercial use.
Where Superwhisper is genuinely better
- More workflow features. It offers modes, prompts, app-specific behaviour, custom vocabulary, history and file transcription. VocalCode does one thing.
- Cloud and local model choice. Users can choose convenience, model size and processing location. VocalCode has no cloud speech-recognition path.
- More platform history. Superwhisper is an established macOS product with Windows support; VocalCode is newer and its macOS build currently supports Apple silicon only.
Where VocalCode is different
- One-time $4.99, plus applicable tax. Thirty-day trial with every feature enabled.
- Three fixed model paths. One auto-detecting Parakeet model backs 25 upstream-documented European language preview choices; Paraformer covers Mandarin Chinese and English; SenseVoice covers Korean and Japanese. Less choice, fewer setup decisions.
- A dedicated Mandarin Chinese model path. VocalCode uses Paraformer for Mandarin Chinese and English rather than asking its European-language model to cover Chinese.
- Speech recognition stays local. No recognition audio or transcript is uploaded, and recognition works offline after model download. Initial trial setup, checkout, activation, periodic licence refresh, model downloads and update checks use the internet.
- It types into most desktop apps — editor, terminal, browser and chat. Windows cannot inject into a higher-privilege administrator window; secure fields and some apps may reject synthetic input.
Also worth looking at
Handy is free, open source and cross-platform — the right choice if you want to read the source or pay nothing. Wispr Flow is a polished cloud subscription. Claude Code's own /voice is included for supported Claude.ai accounts and only exists inside Claude Code.
